Introduction to Design For Civil Engineers

Our aim in writing this book is to bring out the broad issues affecting all design. We have not attempted to provide prescriptions, formulae or recipes to solve particular problems. These can all be found in codes, manuals and other books. We have instead concentrated on the factors affecting design and the process undertaken. Engineering education tends to be a compartmentalised learning of different techniques. The main missing link is the appreciation of the purpose behind these techniques, and the context of their application. We have tried to illustrate the all-pervasive nature of design.

Rock Slope Engineering: Fourth Edition

The stability of rock slopes is an important issue in both civil and mining engineering.  On civil projects, rock cuts must be safe from rock falls and large-scale slope instability during both construction and operation. In open pit mining, where slope heights can be many hundreds of meters, the economics of the operation are closely related to the steepest stable slope angle that can be mined.

Raising Public Awareness of Engineering

In the twentieth century, engineers and engineering made disproportionate contributions, in comparison to their numbers and the credit received, to the design and development of the infrastructures and technologies that support the nation's global competitiveness, security, and standard of living. And they will continue to do so in the twenty-first century. Yet as our lives become more and more dependent on technological marvels, we and our elected representatives understand less and less about it. Most American citizens arc poorly equipped to engage in public debate about technology-related issues that may affect their lives; our elected representatives are also poorly equipped to make decisions about technology-based policy issues.

Engineering Management-Past, Present, and Future

With the globalization of the manufacturing base, outsourcing of many technical services, the efficiencies derived from advances in information technology, and the shifting of our economy to be service-based, the roles of the technical organization and the manager have dramatically changed. Engineers often enter the job market not as traditional engineers but as project managers, technical sales, and lead systems engineers (especially within the defense and information management arenas) involved with conceiving, defining, architecting, designing, integrating, marketing, and testing complex and multi-functional information technology centric systems. Within five years, for most engineers this has become their primary job function.

Engineering The City : how infrastructure works, projects and principles for beginners

How does a city obtain water, gas, and electricity? Where do these services come from? How are they transported? The answer is infrastructure, or the inner, and sometimes invisible, workings of the city. Roads, railroads, bridges, telephone wires, and power lines are visible elements of the infrastructure; sewers, plumbing pipes, wires, tunnels, cables, and sometimes rails are usually buried underground or hidden behind walls. Engineering the City tells the fascinating story of infrastructure as it developed through history along with the growth of cities. Experiments, games, and construction diagrams show how these structures are built, how they work, and how they affect the environment of the city and the land outside it.

Engineering Legends: Great American Civil Engineers: (32 Profiles of Inspiration and Achievement)

Behind every great American civil engineering accomplishment, there is a great American civil engineer. Throughout history civil engineers have made an enormous impact on the progress and development of this nation. While their engineering achievements are regularly recognized, the engineers themselves are rarely discussed. Engineering Legends provides a unique view into the history and progress of 32 great American civil engineers, from the 1700's to the present. It explores the personal lives and professional accomplishments of these outstanding engineers, providing an in-depth look at the people behind these achievements. The book also illustrates the diversity surrounding these engineers, such as their differing backgrounds, their reasons for becoming engineers, obstacles they faced, and their work in different disciplines of civil engineering. As Henry Petroski writes in the foreword, "Rich Weingardt has done the engineering profession a great service in writing and collecting these essays into a book that cannot help but inspire engineers, future engineers, and all who benefit (and will continue to benefit) from their work. Engineering Legends is a book that has something for everyone."

Wood, Muir David.

Civil Engineering: a very short introduction

Civil engineering has made an inestimable contribution to modern life, providing the crucial expertise behind our vast transportation systems and the wide array of built structures where we work, study, and play. In this Very Short Introduction, engineer David Muir Wood turns a spotlight on a field that we often take for granted. He sheds light on the nature and importance of civil engineering in the history of civilization and urbanization, outlines its many accomplishments in the modern era, and points to the hurdles that civil engineering will face in the future. Beginning with the task of creating a settlement on a deserted island, Muir Wood sets out the problems that civil engineers face every day, highlighting the social and environmental challenges as well as the grasp of science and technology needed to craft buildings, bridges, tunnels, houses, and areas of recreation. The author also profiles the lives of some of the major civil engineers, such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the acclaimed builder of steamships, railways, and tunnels, and Sir Joseph Bazalgette, whose sewer system in central London was instrumental in relieving the city from cholera epidemics. Finally, Muir Wood considers the growing difficulty of managing our water and energy supplies, and he looks at the engineering profession's increased sensitivity to building and the environment.

Bayesian Methods for Structural Dynamics and Civil Engineering

Bayesian methods are a powerful tool in many areas of science and engineering, especially statistical physics, medical sciences, electrical engineering, and information sciences. They are also ideal for civil engineering applications, given the numerous types of modeling and parametric uncertainty in civil engineering problems. For example, earthquake ground motion cannot be predetermined at the structural design stage. Complete wind pressure profiles are difficult to measure under operating conditions. Material properties can be difficult to determine to a very precise level – especially concrete, rock, and soil. For air quality prediction, it is difficult to measure the hourly/daily pollutants generated by cars and factories within the area of concern. It is also difficult to obtain the updated air quality information of the surrounding cities. Furthermore, the meteorological conditions of the day for prediction are also uncertain
